Hello all,

MEETINGS:

The meeting for JUNE will be in the western suburbs at Mel Brackstone's studio - at 8/20 Jijaws St, Sumner Park.  BYO small chair.  Also a contribution of a couple of dollars.  Please wear a name badge - it helps everyone get to know each other.

Bring something along to eat or drink if it's your turn (which it is about every 2nd or 3rd meeting you attend).

JULY meeting will be on the 15th at the Uniting Church, 47 Marlborough Rd, Wellington Pt, UBD ref map 184 R4, starting from about 7 - 7.30 pm
Other Petrie dates requested this year are:
19th August 2010
16th December 2010
but are also not confirmed.

If you no longer wish to receive these emails, please reply and I will take you off the list.

MEETING FORMAT:

Please bring along any work you'd like to discuss - whether print, slide or digital - up to about 8-10 images, but not dozens. We'd also like everyone to have a turn so we don't want to get bogged down too long on any one image, and it keeps others interested. We'd also like some time to display some international work too, but we'll see how time goes.

SALON ENTRIES:

as per John's list - see attached.

For entry forms - see web addresses at end, which will allow you to navigate your way to the entry forms. Which web address to use?  If the salon is a FIAP approved one, visit the FIAP website. If it is a PSA approved one, try the PSA site. For APS approved salons, go to the APS website.

I'll leave the info from the previous email here if you want more detail. Just be aware there are more salons (esp PSA approved) in John's list than here.

For all Salons - if you find something you're interested in, download or print the entry form and read it carefully.  Prepare images as instructed, and name them as requested.  This helps the salon organisers no end, and you too!  I'll send out a separate email on tips on how to prepare your entry correctly to meet the salons' requirements - this can be a complex area as the salons all differ, and with entries by CD, or on-line, there's lots to look out for.

For those people looking or more countries for FIAP distinctions, we're venturing a bit further afield - which is why some unusual places.   Never know if you don't give it a go!

      -  2nd Cape International Salon, South Africa (actually a circuit of 3 salons) - closes 25 July 2010. Sections Open, Monochrome, Nature and Nature birds.  Images 1024 wide x 768 high, max 500 KB, JPG. Fees USD 6 /section. Entries are uploaded by a website, payment by credit card (I haven't looked at the website to see if they take PayPal. Need to register first.)  A DVD with all accepted images available at extra cost of USD20. FIAP approved. Website:   http://www.salonmanager.co.za/?salon=CI2   (The web address for the 2nd Cape salon in south Africa in the FIAP web pages is incorrect. ) I have emailed asking about catalogue format and content - the reply follows:

There will not be a printed catalogue but results will be published on the web and on a CD/DVD which may be ordered.
                1. There will be a list of acceptances sorted alphabetically and by country. (As per the report that goes to the website)
                2. There will also be a list of awards.
                3. The accepted images will be in a protected exe file allowing entrants to view the images but not copy them.

I think that if you wish to enter this one, either get your acceptances verified off the web - early - or lash out and buy the DVD.  Given that South Africa is well known for nature and wildlife, one would hope there would be some good images on the DVD!

        - 10th Malmo International Exhibition of Photographic Art, Sweden.  Closes 28 Aug 10. Digital Open Mono and Colour (ie 2 sections). FIAP approved.  Website  www.ffim.se   I found it to be very slow when I was typing up this email.

Australian Internationals

Vigex (APS and FIAP approved) closes 12 June 2010 - prints only. See www.vigex.org and www.vigex.org.au.  They say that registration of entry details via website is preferred. Sections - all prints - monochrome, colour, nature (mono or colour), PJ (mono or colour), creative (mono or colour), also Portrait/People (mono or colour).  Catalogue is a bound, soft cover book.  Note - acceptance ratio is stated to be approx 20%.  Can be paid by PayPal. Note - as this is an Australian salon, it is usually up to individuals to send to it themselves unless we can get a large enough group entry to make it worth while regarding postage and entry fees. Acceptances count towards both APS Honours and FIAP distinctions.

Australian Nationals (can be used for points for APS Honours)
Get entry forms from APS website at end of email or wait for entry forms in "Image".  The Nationals are now on the home page of the APS website.

Tasmanian National Super Circuit - closes 16 Jul 10. Print and digital. No slides.  Print sections: Open mono, nature (C or M), Open colour (incl Creative/Experimental), PJ/SocDoc (C or M), PT (C or M).  Digital sections: Open, nature, PJ/SocDoc, PT.  No uploading. Digital entries to be sent by CD, 1024x768, sRGB, JPG under 500KB.

Forms for the APS National Exhibition are now available on the APS website.  (This is the National held in conjunction with APSCON, so if you're going to Roma, consider putting in a entry.  The accepted digital images are shown during the conference, and the prints will be on display too. (There is a section for AVs as well.)

Other nationals as per web link at the bottom of this email.

Web - based catalogues - if you have acceptances from Georgia (GASO), now would be a good time to get them verified.  GASO results (if I remember correctly) last for 6 months only on the web.

Re Uploading - if you are doing your own uploads, I suggest don't leave it till the last moment. Human nature being what it is, a lot of people leave it till the last moment. However computer servers have a limited capacity, and can't handle an overload, so you may end up disappointed if you can't get your entries in.

for entry forms:

Australian National comps: Go to the Australian Photographic society (APS) website http://www.a-p-s.org.au
Entry forms will also be sent with the "Image" magazine that comes with Australian Photography if you are a member of APS.  Acceptances in APS approved salons can be used towards the LAPS and AAPS honours of the APS.

PSA (Photographic Society of America) approved comps - Entry forms can be found on http://www.exhibitionforms.com/  which is PSA's website for entry forms for photographic competitions.  Some PSA approved salons are also FIAP approved.  Acceptances in PSA approved comps can be used towards the APS honours (LAPS, AAPS and FAPS).

FIAP salons can be found at  http://webplaza.pt.lu/public/suyswill/M2010.htm which is the FIAP web page for salons in 2010 listed in order of closing date.
Acceptances in FIAP approved salons can be used towards the APS honours LAPS, AAPS and FAPS and all FIAP distinctions.  For more info about FIAP itself go to ttp://www.fiap.net/index-en.html    . You can navigate from there to the salons page, then click on the photographer, which will eventually get you to more info about the FIAP salons, including the above web page.

When you are looking for a particular salon, instead of scrolling through many pages of web site, use the browser's "Edit" or "Find" capabilities to find it quicker.

For all salons, read the entry forms carefully, as they are all different, and be aware of the web catalogue problem.
